This is your chance to make the most sought after winter boot here on Salt Spring Island.
The Wilding Foundation is offering an intensive six-day shoemaking workshop where participants will learn the fundamentals of traditional bootmaking while creating their own pair of handcrafted Chelsea boots.
Inspired by the timeless pull-on boot silhouette this workshop begins with a classic Chelsea Boot design and gives you the opportunity to take it in your own direction.
Over six hands-on days, you will learn the essential techniques of handmade footwear and boot construction, including pattern cutting, leather selection and cutting, lasting and shaping, leather sewing, and finishing techniques.
While every participant will begin with the same basic boot structure, there will be lots of time to explore the details that make a pair truly your own. Add broguing, decorative stitching, contrasting leathers, colored ribbon pull loops, custom details, and other personal touches to create a boot that reflects your individual style.
Whether you prefer something simple and timeless or want to experiment with bold details and decoration, this workshop offers the opportunity to combine traditional craftsmanship with your own creative vision.
By the end of the workshop, you will have gained a solid foundation in traditional shoemaking and bootmaking — and leave with your own pair of handmade Chelsea boots.
A half day before the course starts may be required so you can come in to have your feet measured and your boot forms customized. We won’t have time to do this during the week of classes.
Who should apply
We are looking for artists, makers, and creative individuals who are interested in learning the craft of traditional shoemaking.
This opportunity is especially suited to people with experience in craft disciplines such as woodworking, textiles, leatherwork, metalwork, sculpture, or other material-based practices. No prior shoemaking experience is required. Curiosity, patience, and an interest in learning a new craft are the most important qualifications.
With just three participants per workshop, students receive close mentorship and plenty of hands-on guidance throughout the process.
